The Homeowner’s Goal
The homeowners loved the amount of natural light their skylights brought into the space.
The challenge was the heat.
Like many skylights, these allowed significant solar heat into the home, making the room much less comfortable during sunny days.
At the same time, they didn’t want to solve the problem by making the room noticeably darker. Maintaining that bright, open feeling was just as important as improving comfort.
Why We Chose an Exterior Installation
Most window film is installed on the interior surface of the glass.
For this project, however, the skylights were:
- Deep inside the ceiling
- Narrow in design
- Installed at an angle
Because of those factors, the exterior glass provided a much better installation surface.
We also selected a lighter solar control film. Installing it on the exterior allows the film to begin managing the sun’s energy before it passes through the glass, making it an excellent option for this particular application.
As with any exterior product, the film will generally have a shorter service life than an interior installation because it is exposed to weather year-round. However, when performance, accessibility, and the homeowner’s goals are considered together, an exterior application can be the best overall choice.

The homeowners achieved the balance they were looking for:
